£15.00

In 2014, residents of Fairbourne were watching their local news when they found out they were to be Britain's first climate refugees, with their town set to be decommissioned and depopulated by 2054. Housing prices dropped over night, insurance disappeared, and life savings were lost in the chaos.

Swell follows the story of two siblings caught in the purgatory of a fictional but analogous town, ready to be abandoned. Swell asks: how are we able to understand ourselves when the places we call home crumble around us?

Swell first premiered at the Underbelly Cowgate as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022, following R+D performances at The Lion & Unicorn Theatre, London. The show opened to very strong critical acclaim, including five stars from Theatre Weekly & EdFringe Review, as well as receiving The Carol Tambor Award. It subsequently embarked on the company’s debut national tour.
